World Languages

The World Languages Department at York believes that the key to success in foreign language acquisition results from a combination of a determination to succeed, patience, and an understanding that students have embarked upon a path towards a high level of proficiency. Middle School students may select courses in Spanish, French, and American Sign Language (ASL) as well an Introduction to Italian course through the Scholars program. Spanish, Mandarin, French, and American Sign Language are offered to Upper School students.

With specific attention paid to different learning styles, we are able to help even those students to whom learning a language does not come easily. Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum and helps to expand our ability to provide multi-faceted aspects of language learning that include reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Our focus is on a communicative approach with special emphasis placed upon acquiring the vocabulary necessary to participate in dialogues with native speakers in New York City and abroad.

We place a high value on cultural engagement, with class trips to venues where students interact with native speakers, learn about different cuisines, and take risks speaking in the pertinent language. International trips provide particularly appealing opportunities for linguistic and emotional growth, as our students have volunteered in Puerto Rico and visited China, Spain, Peru, and Italy.
