Kathryn (Kate) Maggiotto is thrilled to serve the York Prep Community as its second Head of School. She brings to this role a deep understanding of and commitment to educational leadership and the York Prep community. Since joining York in 2016, Mrs. Maggiotto has served in a variety of roles including as an English teacher, Middle School Dean, Dean of Faculty and Assistant Head of School. Through her close work with York’s teachers and staff, students, and families, Mrs. Maggiotto has a clear understanding of both the unique value of a York Prep education, and how to build on the school's 54-year legacy.
Prior to joining the YP community, she taught at Beauvoir, The National Cathedral Elementary school, in Washington, DC, Young Playwrights’ Theater a social-justice focused arts-education non-profit and Johns Hopkins’ Center for Talented Youth. In addition to her experience as an independent school teacher and leader, Mrs. Maggiotto spent many years working in the theater industry as a producer, playwright, and dramaturg.
Mrs. Maggiotto’s love for learning and leadership began as a student at Emma Willard School. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Trinity College before receiving her Masters in Educational Leadership at Bank Street. Her graduate thesis, Social Media, Selfies, Self & School, explored the role of social media in the lives of adolescents and investigated how schools might support students to navigate their interwoven online and offline worlds. She completed the National Association of Independent Schools Fellowship for Aspiring Heads, a yearlong professional development program to train the next generation of Independent School Heads.
As an educator and leader, Mrs. Maggiotto focuses on relationships and community building. She believes that students and faculty alike do their best learning and teaching when they feel seen, known, and valued for who they are. She is passionate about helping diverse learners find their strengths, and providing teachers and families with the tools necessary to help students better understand themselves and the world around them.
Mrs. Maggiotto grew up in Saratoga Springs, New York, which remains her favorite place to visit. She is married to Nathan, who she met on her first day at Trinity College. Together they have two girls, Molly and Emma. As a family they love spending time running around New York City playgrounds and museums, cooking, and rooting for the Buffalo Bills.
